For the first time in Estonia, the play adapted from Michel Houellebec<\/a>q<\/a><\/span>\u2019s novel : “the Map and the Territory\u201d,<\/em> is<\/span> <\/span>on at the Estonian Draamateater<\/a><\/span>. Sound designer<\/span> Hendrik Kaljuj\u00e4rv<\/span> created the specific sound effects. For this project,\u00a0he recorded live sounds, in Paris last summer, supported\u00a0by the French Institute artist-in-residence program.<\/p>\n

Directed by Juhan Ulfsak<\/span>, the play \u00ab\u00a0the Map and the Territory\u00a0\u00bb is not only based on the novel by French writer Michel Houellebecq, but also on the author\u2019s other books, interviews and declarations\u2019s tone.<\/p>\n

The novel tells the story of Jed\u2019s life, a <\/em>successful fictional French artist. He\u00a0lives in\u00a0an artistic environment, where most time is spent visiting galleries and producing art. \u00a0Jed falls for beautiful Olga. They speak endlessly of Art, Beauty and the World in general. Together they also face the issue of aging. Jed\u2019s routine is only interrupted by his visits to his ageing dad,\u00a0and their time\u00a0spent watching\u00a0sport together. A brutal murder changes their peaceful lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Map and the Territory\u201d takes place in France, one cradle of democracy and Human rights. Their declining hedonistic life-style, drinking good wine and endless conversations at a caf\u00e9-terrace, belongs to the past. Anything that could have happened already did.<\/p>\n

Michel Houellebecq is one of the darkest authors of our time. His words cut deep through our contemporary world and its typical middle-aged white man. Houellebecq is tirelessly engaged in \u201cman\u201d as a theme.<\/p>\n

Some have called him the biggest hooligan of modern literature, a cynic and a pessimist. But others say that Houellebecq may be the biggest humanist of our time, someone who has something very important to say. Houellebecq, himself, finishes his novel with the words: \u201cAs the last members of this species are extinguished, we think it just to render this last tribute to humanity, a homage which itself will one day disappear, buried beneath the sands of time. It is necessary that this tribute be made, if only once.\u201d<\/p>\n

The novel \u201cThe Map and the Territory\u201d won the highest French literary honour, the Prix Goncourt in 2010<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Actor and director Juhan Ulfsak<\/span> is one of catalysts of Von Krahl Theatre.\u00a0During the last few years, he has worked as an actor and director in various theatres in Estonia, Finland, Germany and elsewhere. His last play, \u201cThe Case of the Lost Friend\u201d premiered at Theatre NO99.<\/p>\n
