Royer)<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Jean Rondeau plays Bach on his debut album &#039;IMAGINE&#039;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e81-X11jJMk?start=9&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>With his electric-shock hair and Paris Conservatoire musical education, Jean Rondeau is on a mission to make the harpsichord hip.<\/p>\n<p>In its 17th-century heyday, the harpsichord provided the accompaniment to palace intrigue and courtships. However, the harpsichord fell out of favour as the piano, which was perceived as offering more tonal variety, began its dominance. Now Rondeau, 23, plans to return it to centre stage, while his brooding looks make him the latest \u201csex symbol\u201d in the classical firmament.<\/p>\n<p>Rondeau, discovered the harpsichord aged six, <strong>won first prize at the Bruges International Harpsichord Competition<\/strong>, where critics praised \u201ca virtuosity that allows him to dash off lightning appoggiaturas, phrasing that nourishes and refreshes the drama, lively, ardent, captivating and always dynamically charged\u201d. Rondeau also breaks with classical convention by breaking off to talk to the audience between pieces.<\/p>\n<p>He says, \u201cIt is not a \u2018heavy-sounding\u2019 instrument in the concert hall, but there are some really emotional compositions in baroque music.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m proud that the harpsichord is featured in rock and pop. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones used the sound,\u201d Rondeau says. \u201cSo did Led Zeppelin and Queen.
