For this new movie,  Nolan said that his references were some French Classics films such as The Wages of Fear (Henri-Georges Clouzot) and A Man Escaped (Robert Bresson) but also great directors from the silent film era: Murnau and von Stroheim. Finally, beforing shooting the movie, he organized a screening  for all his crew of The Thin Red Line, directed by Terrence Malick.
