In 2016, after British and US elections shaken by “fake news”, the Oxford Dictionary picked “post-truth” as the word of the year, which it defined by “circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”.
Where does this concept come from? Why such a paradox in an era of information and big data? What impacts on our societies? Can fake news be regulated?
Those questions, among others, are the ones we invite you to come discuss in a convivial atmosphere with our speakers:
- Thierry Vallat is a Paris- and Tallinn-based lawyer specialized in digital issues
- Marju Himma-Kadakas is editor in chief for the science portal of ERR News and a PhD candidate in Media studies at the University of Tartu
- Andrey Krashevskiy is a journalist-editor for ERR News in Russian
The debate will be held in English and will be moderated by the French Institute.
