We will be screening Les Maîtres du temps (1982), a cornerstone of French animation and a defining work of science-fiction. The film marked a decisive break from the youth-oriented norm of the industry at the time. Adapted from Stefan Wul and visually crafted by Moebius, it presents a stark, tense universe where drawing becomes pure narrative tension.
René Laloux stands at the centre of this shift. Emerging from the creative ecosystem that reshaped European sci-fi, he worked first with Roland Topor, then with Moebius, key figure of Métal Hurlant. This aesthetic matrix influenced an entire cinematic generation—Ridley Scott’s Alien, early concepts of Tron, later resonances in Lucas and Otomo. Les Maîtres du temps follows this lineage: minimalist storytelling, moral ambiguity, precise and economical world-building. Still sharp, still modern, still relevant.
Synopsis: A boy stranded on a hostile planet becomes the object of a race against time. Space travel, strange encounters, clean and exact scenery—Laloux builds a narrative without comfort, where every visual choice drives the core tension.
