The French Apéro : Breton Edition

The French Apéro : Breton Edition

It’s time for the French Institute’s second aperitif which will this time be inspired by the Brittany region! We hope to see you all on December 14 at 18h45 at Pudel for a real fest-noz with Breton folk dances, cider and crepes!

The aim of the French Institute’s new apéro tradition is to bring together francophones, to enjoy some good company, to have a glass of wine (or cider, like Bretons) and to speak in French!

This time, our apertif is inspired by Brittany, a French region. We’ll meet at 18h45 at Pudel to be ready at 19h00 for some serious folk dancing, taught by real Bretons. The evening will, of course, continue with crepes and cider.

About Brittany

Brittany (la Bretagne) is a French region which has a strong identity and traditions. Long coastline, medieval villages, prehistoric megaliths and deep forests are characteristic of Brittany, as well as folk dances, music and tales.

When talking about Brittany, it would be impossible not to mention its famous galettes, crepes and cider which are appreciated everywhere in France.

Some of the most famous places in Brittany are the pirates’ town Saint-Malo, historic Dinard, Dinan and Quimper, the university town Rennes, the megaliths of Carnac, the Morbihan Coast, Pink Granite Coast and Finistère, Brittany’s own turquoise Riviera.

fest-noz

Fest-noz is the Breton folk dance tradition revived in the 1950’s, based on ancient peasants’ feasts. In the 1970’s, Breton folk dances were rediscovered by the youth and became popular urban events.  Today, around 1000 fest-nozes are organized each year. As an important part of the Breton identity, the tradition was added by UNESCO to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
