After The father of my children (2009) and Eden (2014), the young French director Mia Hansen-Løve comes back with a fifth movie, rewarded by the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival 2016.
Mia Hansen-Løve continues the exploration of her favorite subjects as time, abscence or self-assertion, and broaches the question of intergenerational transmission, with persons of different ages, from youth to old age passing through maturity.
Things to come (L’Avenir in French) presents a woman who tries to reinvent her life after being abandoned by her husband. At a turning point in her life, she will renew a strong relationship with an ex-student who went into activism. Through this relationship, Mia Hansen-Love reflects on our society and epoch, with questioning about politics, transmission, education which are at the heart of our current concerns and gives all the meaning of the title “Things to come”.
More than ever, the artistic direction offers a discreet elegance and a musical precision. André Marcon, Edith Scob but also all the young performers are excellent, next to a radiant Isabelle Huppert.
